IN HONOUR OF MADOSINI

Dear Friends

23rd of December 2022 is the day Madosini left her body. Our beloved aunt and friend, and inspiration to so many. Madosini was the greatest virtuoso in the world on the Xhosa bows the uhadi and umrhubhe. She was the living embodiment of the values of tolerance, kindness, community and peace. She had a megawatt personality that made her an enormous joy to be with, whether you were in a theatre audience or in the same room as her.

We invite you to an online concert to be held in Madosini’s honour.

This online event will feature a curated selection of film footage, with moments from Madosini’s career across the decades, introduced live by some of her close family and fellow artists. The films include the best episodes from Songs are Like the Grass, a series featuring 11 of her songs.
This footage goes a long way towards conveying what it was like to see Madosini perform - the haunting beauty and spirituality of her music, combined with her irrepressible sense of humour and gift for story-telling. Madosini’s stories and songs, some of which she learned from her mother, reflect a whole era in South African history, particularly pertaining to the lives of rural women.

Icon, legend, cultural treasure - these words are so over-used but in Madosini’s case they are all true. Yet she lived so very humbly, giving all her earnings to provide for the basic needs of a large network of family and neighbours. When Madosini died, they lost their sole means of support. Since her funeral there has been no support whatsoever for the family from any government department or from any organisation that has held events in Madosini’s name. We are selling tickets for this online event for R110 via Quicket. The proceeds will go to help the family and will be paid directly to Pumza, Madosini’s niece and right-hand woman during her life, and now the main executor of her affairs.
