Part of the magic of sitar, and Indian Classical music as a whole, is the tradition of how it is passed and taught from one generation to the next. Indian classical music is one of the oldest forms of classical music still taught and practiced to this day. It is thanks to my teacher, Paul Livingstone, and his teacher Pandit Ravi Shankar (among many others), that I can perform and combine this tradition into my own music. My mission in life is to not only hold these musical traditions and grow them, but to also pass them along to others who feel the call dive into such a rich musical culture and tradition.
The sitar melody is based on an Indian Raga called Kirwani,

In a technical and musical sense, A raga is basically a series of melodic rules. You use certain notes when ascending, and certain notes when descending. Certain notes have more weight (or are more important than others) and certain notes always resolve certain ways.

In a more energetic definition, a raga is essentially a mood, or emotion. And there are different ragas for different moods and emotions. Almost like a living spirit. And when performing a raga, the performer is attempting to channel that feeling and spirit and express it musically.

Raga Kirwani uses the western equivalent to the harmonic minor scale. And to my ears and feelings, carries with it a sense of mystery and darkness. A sort of crying out.
